What are Talking Charts Guidelines?

Background

Over four years, the Talking Charts project investigated how different audiences engage with data visualizations. Drawing from ten of our own studies, we synthesized key findings on visualization design and use. This work resulted in seven research-based recommendations, the Talking Charts Guidelines. Each guideline focuses on a specific aspect of design or implementation and is supported by checklist items, briefly explained with evidence from our research.

Using the guidelines

The guidelines can support anyone creating or using data visualizations by raising critical questions that shape audience understanding. Not all points apply to every chart: for example, adding context usually helps, while emotional appeal may not fit all topics or audiences.
